Out and about with Andrew – week ending Sunday 18 September

I was back in Parliament last week and began the week by representing the Leader of the Opposition at this year’s White Ribbon Australia morning tea. I was also honoured to stand alongside Maleny locals Chris Sang and Bill Richardson in opposing men’s violence towards women.

The highlight of the week was the Parliament passing laws making it mandatory for early childhood workers to report suspected cases of child abuse.  This crucial extra layer of protection for Queensland kids follows a long and courageous battle by John and Sue Sandeman.  Mason Parker, their 16-month-old grandson, was murdered in 2011 by his mother’s then-partner.  After taking up the Sandemans’ campaign, Shadow Minister for Education Tracy Davis, introduced the Private Member’s Bill which will now become known as Mason’s Law.  It will not bring a precious little boy back but it will ensure the 28,000 children currently in Queensland child care centres are kept safer.

Great news this week when it was announced that construction will start shortly on additional lanes on the Bruce Highway between Caloundra Road and the Sunshine Coast Motorway exits, as well as new interchanges. I commend the Fulton Hogan Seymour Whyte Joint Venture on coming up with some very innovative solutions to our interchange problems and along with Ted O’Brien and Andrew Wallace I am thrilled to see our hard work on this initiative pay off.  Thanks to the Turnbull Federal Coalition for their 80% contribution to the nearly $1 Billion project.

Wittafest did not fail to impress again this year and I had some fun celebrating the history, culture and people of Witta with Andrew Wallace.  Congratulations to everyone involved in this fantastic event.

On Sunday I attended the official opening of Ted O’Brien’s office in Maroochydore. Ted is the new Federal Member for Fairfax, and his electorate takes in Palmwoods, Flaxton and Kidaman Creek in the north of the state seat of Glass House.

I was proud to be the team sponsor for the U14 Boys at the Beerwah Glasshouse United Soccer Club this season so I was thrilled to celebrate with them on Sunday afternoon – Premiers and Grand Final Runners Up! Outstanding!
