Powell Media Release – Pjyama cricket in the name of charity (24 September 2014)

A game of backyard cricket with a difference will be played in Maleny this Saturday 27 September to raise money for Lung Foundation Australia.

This annual game of backyard cricket will see the Maleny Maulers battle it out against Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell, and his celebrity team in a tribute match to honour the memory of Dr Peter Oliver who lost his battle with lung cancer in 2013.

“Those community members in the Hinterland who had the pleasure of knowing Dr Oliver know how passionate he was about raising awareness for lung cancer and how hard he fought to survive.  This game now recognises his personal campaign and his family’s contribution to our great community.  All money raised on the day will be donated to Lung Foundation Australia in Peter’s memory.

“While there is plenty of focus on Dr Oliver’s legacy, match day also has a lighter side with players from both sides wearing their best pyjamas as the team uniform. This element certainly helps to bring a bit of humour to the game and ensures players and spectators have a thoroughly enjoyable day,” said Mr Powell.

“The Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club’s Gail Denver has co-ordinated much of the day’s schedule with plenty of emphasis on food and drinks to keep everyone happy.  All proceeds from food and beverage purchases on the day will also be donated to Lung Foundation Australia.

“It will be well worth the trip to Maleny to watch this year’s match as my team and I have a score to settle with Mr Denver and his Maulers.  This year I have put together my strongest team of celebrities yet, with a few politicians thrown in for good measure, so those Maulers better watch out.”

The Andrew Powell’s Celebrity X1 will comprise of the following team members –
