Member for Glass House Andrew Powell MP took to the Streets in Maleny and Glasshouse Mountains on Thursday August 21 to spread the word ‘Think Queensland, Buy Local’, in the lead up to the 2014 Queensland Small Business Week and Buy Locally Saturday campaign, kicking off on September 1.
“ Queensland Small Business Week celebrates the outstanding contribution small business makes to our economy and the culminating event, Buy Local Saturday is a great reminder to focus our attention on our local small business heroes that keep our communities thriving.
“ Of the 4,700 small businesses in my electorate, some are family owned and have underpinned the local economy for generations, while others are relatively new and contribute to the diversity of providers from which consumers can choose, while also increasing employment opportunities for people in our region,” Mr Powell said.
Glass House Chamber of Commerce President, Bob McLean said that Small Business Week is about celebrating existing businesses and encouraging new ones to invest in the district.
“ Small businesses work very hard to gain and maintain the support of their local customers. Local producers, retailers, restaurants, manufacturers, tourism operators and creative industries make a town unique, in turn encouraging visitors and boosting the economy,” Mr McLean said.
Maleny Chamber of Commerce President, Spencer Shaw agreed with Mr McLean and thanked the Queensland Government for encouraging small buisness.
“Small Business is at the heart of what makes Maleny a great place to live and work.
“ Our local businesses keep money in our town, employ local people and give our children employment opportunities. They are innovative, unique, resilient, efficient and passionate.
“ I’m proud to be part of the great business community that thrives and drives Maleny. Buying locally keeps the Magic in Maleny,“ Mr Spencer said.
