More children than ever are outside and getting active, with the latest round of the Newman Government’s Get Started program, the most successful to date.
Get Started is a key election promise that provides kids who can least afford, or may otherwise benefit from joining a sport or recreation club with vouchers of up to $150 to help with club membership and/or participation fees.
Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell MP, said Get Started was a wonderful initiative with 527 vouchers issued in Glass House this round.
“The Newman Government is committed to helping young Queenslanders be active,” Mr Powell said.
“In addition to increasing physical activity, participating in a sport or recreation club is a great way for young people to improve their self-confidence and communication skills.
“I am thrilled that so many families in Glass House have taken advantage of this offer.”
Recreation and Sport Minister, Steve Dickson, said that this round of the Get Started program has seen more than 28 per cent of applicants who received a voucher providing feedback that they have not previously played club sport.
“It’s been an overwhelming success, expected to help more than 20,000 children and young people join a sport or recreation club, and continuing the trend of our other Get in the Game programs, which have become more popular with each round,” Mr Dickson said.
“That’s exactly what the Newman Government was striving to deliver through this election commitment—to get more children and young people active.
“There was not enough focus on this by former governments, but the overwhelming popularity shows it was needed.
“Even more significant, around 80 per cent of vouchers issued have gone to Health Care or Pensioner Concession Card holders, the people that need our help the most.
“We have also received a huge response from clubs this round, with more than 3,300 clubs now registered for the program, including at least 70 registrations in the last month.”
Mr Dickson reminded successful applicants to ensure their vouchers are redeemed at a Get Started registered club by 15 May 2014.
