Residents from across the Sunshine Coast and beyond have had their say on the future of the Bruce Highway and they have overwhelmingly spoken in support of improved road conditions.
Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell MP, tabled the 2910 signatures collected in a petition in Parliament today and thanked the community for their support.
“The community have shared their opinion on this loud and clear and thanks to the Sunshine Coast Daily, who well and truly got behind this petition, we have seen a great result in the number of signatures collected.
“This support builds on the recent joint announcement between the Newman Government and a Tony Abbot led Coalition Government who has each put funding on the table to see this project delivered.
“The figures say it all, this Highway accounts for around seven per cent of the national Highway network, but it accounts for 17 per cent of national road fatalities. Funding will be focused on improving safety, capacity, flood mitigation and efficiency,” Mr Powell said.
“The Coalition realise we need this investment and have offered $6.7 billion for the entire Bruce Highway upgrade project compared with only $4.1 billion from the ALP.
“I am pleased to say money will flow from day one of a Coalition Government and they have identified the increased lanes for the Sunshine Coast as a major priority.
“This is good news for Sunshine Coast residents with no more Sunday afternoon traffic jams that stretch from Sippy Downs to Caboolture. It means increased tourism, agriculture, resources and construction which we know are all winners for our region,” Mr Powell concluded.
