While Labor’s announcement to fund the Caloundra Road and Sunshine Motorway interchanges along the Bruce Highway is good news, don’t be fooled into thinking it is a new announcement.
Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell MP said he was pleased that it will result in a positive future for people that use the Wilson Road and Sippy Creek Road interchanges within the Glass House electorate but it is not new money.
“While this is good news, we need to remember that this funding was already budgeted by the Federal Government – this is an allocation out of existing base funding. It is not like they have found some spare money lying around in the bank account which they thought they’d put towards the Bruce Highway.
“Don’t get me wrong, we are happy to get the money but the Bruce Highway needs additional funding not just announcements that recycle existing base funding that was already promised.
“The Newman Government has put an extra $1 billion on the table but the Federal Government needs to meets their traditional 80-20 split which will provide a total of $5 billion in additional funding for the Bruce Highway over the next decade.
“This plan, if properly funded will deliver more safety, more capacity and better flood mitigation – but it needs contribution from the Federal Government.
“It is alarming that the RACQ predicts that, without proper funding, 300-400 people will die over the next decade on the Bruce Highway.
“We have put an additional $1 billion on the table over ordinary base funding – it’s now time for both political parties at the Federal level to step up and invest in the Bruce,” Mr Powell concluded.
