JOINT MEDIA RELEASE (WYATT ROY, WARREN TRUSS, FIONA SIMPSON, ANDREW POWELL) LNP Team fights for upgrades to the D’Aguilar Highway (24 January 2011)

A united LNP front is calling on all levels of government to provide assistance for urgent upgrades to the D’Aguilar Highway, which tragically claimed yet another life over the weekend.

During the 2010 federal election campaign the LNP committed an additional $12m funding, on top of Federal Government blackspot allocation for Queensland, for six D’Aguilar Highway blackspots between Caboolture and Kilcoy.

Wyatt Roy, Federal Member for Longman, said that in November he wrote to the Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, specifically outlining the urgent need for passing lanes and upgrades to blackspot sections of the D’Aguliar Highway.

“In November I wrote to the Minister, calling on the Federal government to fund upgrades to six blackspots on the D’Aguilar highway.

“In a response from the Minister last week, not only did he fail to provide a timeline for upgrades to the D’Aguilar Highway but he also failed to commit to any additional blackspot funding specifically for the Highway.

“The events of the weekend illustrate the critical need for upgrades to this section of the highway,” said Mr Roy.

Shadow Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Warren Truss, said that the D’Aguilar Highway was clearly in need of upgrades to ensure the safety of motorists.

“The Coalition remains committed to the improvement of the D’Aguilar Highway, including an additional $12million, specifically for upgrades to blackspots on the D’Aguilar Highway.

“I call upon the Federal Government to cut through the red tape, and urgently provide funding for these upgrades,” said Mr Truss.

Andrew Powell, State Member for Glass House said that he has been calling on the State Labor Government to provide funding to make the highway safe.

“The time for inaction has passed.  It is now time for Labor to finally take action and fix what are well known problems on this dangerous stretch of road.

“We know where the problems are and we need the government to fix them,” said Mr Powell.

Shadow Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Fiona Simpson, said that she has been calling on the government to provide funding for passing lanes for the D’Aguilar Highway.

“This is another example of a Labor Government mess, with Labor failing to provide essential infrastructure upgrades.

“We are calling on the State Government to allocate funds for upgrades including passing lanes on the D’Aguilar Highway.
