Andrew Powell promoted in LNP revamp
Glass House MP Andrew Powell has been promoted to Parliamentary Secretary for Mental Health, Drug Strategy and Health Personnel under a revamped Shadow Cabinet line-up announced by State Opposition and LNP Leader John-Paul Langbroek*.
“Andrew has a strong history within the Queensland public service and proven himself as a dynamic member in our team,” said Mr Langbroek.
“I am confident he will be successful in his new role.
“The LNP has an extremely hard working team on the Sunshine Coast. Andrew will assist two other local MPs, Member for Caloundra and the Shadow Minister for Health, Mark McArdle as well as Kawana’s Jarrod Bleijie who was appointed the Shadow Minister for Justice and Corrective Services.”
Mr Langbroek said he was determined to re-energise and refocus Government in Queensland and the LNP’s new Shadow Cabinet and the new Shadow Parliamentary Secretary positions reflected the priorities for Queenslanders.
“I am very excited about my new role and will continue to work with the same energy and determination that I do within my local electorate, for all Queenslanders,” said Mr Powell.
“I am committed to assisting with the reform and strengthening of Queensland’s health system.
“The LNP’s aim is to provide dedicated psychiatric hospital beds for the mentally-ill and I will work with Mr McArdle towards the promotion, prevention and early intervention of mental health.
“Mental illness has a huge impact on many Queenslanders, not just sufferers and their immediate families, but also the wider community and Bligh and Labor must give it the attention it deserves.
“I also look forward to working with Mr Bleijie to develop programs that tackle drug and substance abuse,” said Mr Powell.
Mr Langbroek said Mr Powell’s experience working as a public servant in areas like the Department of Child Safety stood him in good stead as the Health Personnel representative.
“Health workers have been treated very shabbily under this long term Labor Government with the payroll fiasco that has dragged on and the culture of bullying they have fostered,” he said.
“Andrew will work closely with Shadow Health Minister Mark McArdle to ensure our health workers are valued and treated with the respect they deserve.”
Mr Langbroek said he had moulded a Shadow Cabinet to reflect what the LNP would deliver in Government rather than simply mirroring the line-up of the long term Labor Government.
“This is about fresh ideas, fresh goals and a fresh start for Queensland.”
