Glass House Volunteer Awards

I held a morning tea in my office last week to celebrate our Glass House volunteers as part of National Volunteers Week.

We have so many amazing people in our community that give up their own time every day to help others – they really are the unsung heroes of Glass House and they deserved to be thanked!

Parliament was in session all of last week so that made for a busy weekend catching up with community members at our local events.

Some of the things I participated in included –

The Maleny Show Dance

The Woodford Show Ball

And the family and I visited Rick’s Garage in Palmwoods to celebrate my birthday on Sunday!

The storm that hit on the afternoon of Friday 1 May had a massive impact on some sections of the Glass House community. Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell MP, toured the area on the day following and was shocked at the devastation.

“It was really quite incredible. The people I encountered in my travels that day had been hit hard and many have gone on to have their homes declared ‘un-liveable’ by their assessors.

“And the many calls and emails I have received since that night have told a similar story of destruction and displacement. I’m pleased we have been able to steer many of them on the path to repairing the damage to their home and their hearts.

“Perhaps the shining light in this terrible event was the assistance that came from people within our own community. Locally, I feel we must take out hats off to the hardworking volunteers within the Caboolture Historical Village who opened up their doors that Friday afternoon and welcomed any and all community members who needed assistance.

“Roger, Greg and the team went above and beyond to extend their generous hospitality in the way off food and comfort and a place to stay for many displaced community members and visitors,” Mr Powell said.

Mr Powell will visit the Caboolture Historical Village on Wednesday 13 May at 1.30pm to present them with a $250 IGA voucher to show his appreciation for their efforts.

“I am so proud to be a local member of Parliament at times like these and see the way our community comes together to help each other. It gives me enormous pleasure to be able to present just a small gift to the Caboolture Historical Village to show my deepest appreciation.

Mr Powell take the opportunity to present this voucher to the volunteers of the Village as part of National Volunteer Week celebrations.

For the past six years, the Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell MP has paid tribute to the hardworking volunteers in the Glass House community by holding a special awards ceremony and morning tea in their honour to coincide with National Volunteers Week.

“This is by far and away the highlight of the Glass House electorate calendar and something I am proud to have continued into my now sixth year as the Member for Glass House.

“The way I see it, anyone who volunteers in any capacity, in any community organisation in Glass House deserves to be publicly recognised and thanked for their contribution to our community.

“Those volunteers we will recognise in 2015 range from helping at local schools, in environment and historical groups and within our Chamber of Commerce organisations. They should all be so proud of their efforts and walk away from today’s event knowing their community is very blessed to have them.

“I hold this event every year to celebrate and acknowledge the efforts of these volunteers on behalf of our community and show them our appreciation for their time and dedication,” he said.

The list of successful recipients from this year are from the following groups–

Now in its sixth year, the annual Glass House Volunteer Awards have opened and the Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell MP, is calling on community members to get their nominations in for our deserving volunteers.

“Anyone who volunteers in any capacity, in any community organisation in Glass House deserves to be publicly recognised and thanked for their contribution to our community.

“Our communities really wouldn’t function without the hard work and dedication shown by volunteers.

“Volunteers can be people who cook snags on the BBQ at the school fete, people who coach the local footy team, a parent who helps with school reading or at tuckshop, the list is truly endless.

“This annual celebration aims to acknowledge their efforts on behalf of our community and show them our appreciation for their time and dedication,” he said.

Mr Powell’s volunteer award ceremony will be held during National Volunteer Week from 11 to 17 May.  Nominated Volunteers will be invited to attend a special morning tea held in their honour.

“Nominations forms can be obtained from my office or on my website and need to be returned by Friday 17 April so we have plenty of time to make necessary arrangements.

“This year’s National theme is ‘Give Happy, Live Happy’ and I’m sure it’s true to say that volunteers in our community would definitely be happy knowing they have given back to people or groups in need.

“I’m also sure that most volunteers don’t expect any public recognition for their contribution, which makes this ceremony even more important.  Volunteers are special people and if we can make them feel even more special for one morning, then why not!” Mr Powell concluded.

Nominations forms are available by calling 5435 2013 or online at
